This is the story of a young schoolboy called Sanastian, who happens to find a very special book and hides in the school attic one stormy morning to read at leisure. He learns that something terrible is happening in the wondrous world of Pontasia.

The Muda-muda Nothing is destroying everything that encounters on its way. The creatures of Pontasia are obviously worried to death and in great distress.

But there is something else to trouble them: the Secretary General of the UN of Pontasia announces that the Sicklike Empress is very, very, VERY sick.

The cause of the Empress' sickness remains obscure. However, one thing IS known: a warrior must undertake the mission of going to the other end of the world to find the answer. And that warrior, that hero wannabe, that idol of the masses is no other than the divine Atrobeyu.

Atrobeyu and his loyal horse Karthaxji travel through wild and inhospitable landscapes and nothing seems to stop them. Until they reach the Swamps of PMS, where the noble steed suffers a major depression that disables him to go further, to Atrobeyu's dismay and utter discomfiture.

Lost and lonely, Atrobeyu must go on through the swamps to the Turtle Island of Ancient Glories, in search of Morlazaki, the one who all knows.

Several hours of torture later, an unconscious Atrobeyu is rescued by the lucky dragon Falkniour, who takes him flying to a safe harbour.

The place in itself is the home of Ojiwook a nutty inventor who spends all his free time spying on young boys on the quest through the gates of the evil sphinxes, which guard the path to the Great Oracle.

They say the eyes of the Sphinxes are like weapons of mass destruction: as long as they stay closed, one is safe. But when doubt filters into the warrior's heart, the thin slits begin to open, and then it is already too late...

However, Atrobeyu is so self-satisfied that he has no doubts on himself, therefore he steps on to the next stage, the Great Oracle's lair, with an air of optimism.

And the answer of the Great Oracle upon the request is that he should look at the Mirror of Erised (versatile and ubicuous thing, that mirror) to find out the real purpose of his quest.

After several hours of self and other staring, Atrobeyu resumes his journey, with the face of his target still in mind. But where to find such a piece? Falkniour gets tired of his constant muttering, bitching and ordering around, and drops him at a desert place full of paintings in the walls.

They seem to convey the story of Atrobeyu's adventures and a strange message, but what? Trying to, yet again, find an answer to the neverunveiling enigma, Atrobeyu finally finds his nemesis, the vicious monster-wolf Morkutsu.

His mission is no other than to kill Atrobeyu. But Atrobeyu won't let himself be done without a fight!

Atrobeyu manages to kill Morkutsu and come out safe and clean from the fight, but is then caught in the middle of a wild and final storm.

Nagged by tre Sicklike Empress, Falkniour has no choice but to come and rescue Atrobeyu when the Muda-muda Nothing gives its final blow to the remaining land of Pontasia. All that is left now is the Ivorikkai Tower, floating in space on top of an asteroid island. And inside the tower, the Sicklike Empress awaits the arrival of the hero. The real hero.

Finally aware that the future of Pontasia is in his hands, Sanastian musters up the courage and opens the window of the attic. He lets the pouring rain mingle with his tears of exhaustion after having exerted the brain for so long, and at last he screams the name that has been in his mind from the beginning, the name that haunts his dreams and fills his brains, his soul, his mere existence...

Is it however too late? What has become of Pontasia during those minutes of self-doubting and hesitation?

To cut a long story short, Pontasia has gone to hell, and there's very little that remains.

After saying goodbye to the Empress Yukimura and to his savings for University, enabling Pontasia to come to being again, Sanastian rides Falkniour in pursuit of the only compensation possible to such an ordeal:

*THE END*
